Hydrography and Monitoring
Hydrography
The main goal of hydgraphic activities is to measure and observe the quantity and quality of surface-, near surface-, and underground waters, and the collection and elaboration of the data regarding water levels, water supplies. The hydgraphic service with its 100 years of work has existed as an independent set of activities within the Directorate since 1975, and has gradually developed to become the main set of duties of the professional work done at the Directorate. For the reliable and high quality work in the field of hydgraphy, the Directorate received the ISO 9001 quality assurrance label in 2006.
Measurement, registration and data collection is done in main stations with a regional significance, and also in local stations. The surface stations (1st image), the springs (2nd image), the ground water (3rd image), the stratum water and weather stations (4st image) almost all have up-to-date digital data collection and measuring devices.
Another task of hydgraphy is flood prevention. It is the duty of hydrologist professionals to provide those who are doing the protection activities with the latest hydrologic information (evaluation, forecast, warning). One of the helpers in fast information forwarding is the hydrologic telemetric system of the Directorate. In this system every major river (like Danube and Drava) and every smaller river (Baranya channel, Hábi channel, Kapos stream) can be found on which there is a possibility of flooding and whose floods can cause considerable damage. The stations are connected to the head office via telephone so water levels are continuously monitored.
Also another important task is to measure water supplies and help them integrate into the economy. This is also a regular, everyday routine. With this work, we can focus on not overusing a specific supply but creating an economically stabile use. The aim of these activities is to use and utilize water supplies in a way which does not damage them, and also that supplies which are worse in quality should become cleaner and better.
This goal shall be achieved by the Water Framework Directive, which takes the ecologic state of natural waters as the basis of qualification.

Monitoring
We understand hydrographic monitoring as a system of observation stations which allow us to measure water quantity and quality. For more detailed information on monitoring, please visit the menu Status of Waters/Monitoring.
