Revitalisation of branch Felsőszentmártoni at River Dráva
Revitalisation of branch ’Felsőszentmártoni’ at River Dráva
Developments for the protection of surface water in water protection zones with regional importance
ID No: DDOP 5.1.5/A-09-2010-0003
The project is supported by the European Union and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund
Antecedent of revitalisation:
The ‘Felsőszentmártoni’ branch, situated in the region of ‘Felsőszentmárton’ settlement, is one of the left-side branches of River Dráva, which has completely cut-off from the main river by now and silted up significantly. The idea on the revitalisation first got formed in 2004, at the time a general assessment on its status took place, which was then followed by an in-depth study based on the survey of the branch in 2008. This study expressed clear revitalisation ideas.
Description of the project:
Within the ’Dél-dunántúli Operatív Program’ an opportunity has arisen to materialize the ideas of previous years, to carry out the necessary planning, then to execute the revitalisation and finally to obtain financial resources. Our application was submitted on 28th January 2010, got selected for funding, hence the Subsidy Contract was signed on 2nd November 2010.
The following interventions are planned during the revitalisation of the branch:
1. Removal of wood – together with the siltation of the branch, the former riverbed got more and more overgrown with salicaceae, therefore they need removing.
2. Removal of alluvium – some 47,735 m3of silt is to be removed along the whole length of the branch and deposited into the main channel, the riverbed of Dráva. After the removal of silt, the branch will have access to fresh water at least 200 days per year, based on the water level of River Dráva in the branch.
3. Reconstructing the current weir – the weir was installed in the middle third of the branch that now prevents proper water flow and thus water replenishment of the branch. During the revitalisation, the weir will be reconstructed in a way that it still maintains traffic to the island as well as allows water replenishment 200 days annually. According to the plans a pipeline is laid down in the lower parts of the weir; furthermore, the material of the weir is to be replaced so it will be permeable by water. The planned quantity of rocks used for the replacement is of 696 m3.
Expected result and aim of the project
As a result of the revitalisation of the ‘Felsőszentmártoni’ branch, over a 200 day period inflow of water and daily water replenishment will be secured. Even if not reflecting the previous condition completely, it will definitely bring the branch back to life to a more significant degree than its current condition. The surroundings will improve in their appearance greatly, namely its flora and fauna; thus the popularity of the site will grow and becomes a touristic point of interest.
Phasing of the revitalisation
The construction commenced on 3rd March 2011 with the removal of wood. Following the closed season for constructions, which is between 15th April and 31th August, the next phase is to be initiated, namely the removal of silt and the reconstruction of the current weir. The expected closing date of the project implementation is 18th October 2012 at a total gross cost of 178,750,000 HUF.
The investment is implemented via the ‘Dél-dunántúli Operatív Program’ within the framework of ‘Új Széchényi Terv’.
