Territorial Characteristics

On ten thousand square kilometers

The operational area of the directorate is almost 10 thousand square kilometers (the operational area is defined by the appendix of 29/2004. (XII.25) KvVM Decree), where 730 thousand people reside, the number of settlements numbering almost 570. The majority of the 9976 square kilometers is in Somogy County (5634), a little less in Baranya (4398), and the smallest amount in Tolna (214), with the headquarters located in Pécs.
In South-Transdanubia, rolling country dominates; the main receiving water of the small creeks are the Danube, Drava and Lake Balaton at the edges of the operational area. “Creek” is a technical term, in reality, there are extreme river-flows, which means that in case of intense rain, the creek is unable to carry off the incoming water and thus can swell up to maybe even the size of a river, causing flood. Due to extreme weather, we have to anticipate rapidly changing water flow, thus the prevention of water damage and the usage, management of water are all part of the tasks of our Directorate.
